About
Your Clinical Geneticist
I identify and support individuals and their families with an increased risk of cancer through evidence-based, specialised compassionate clinical care.
My Dedication to Cancer Genetics = Your Health In Good Hands
Dr. Anju Kulkarni
I graduated with distinctions in Medicine and Pathology from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2000, then trained at specialist level in medical oncology and clinical genetics, including a period of dedicated research in ovarian cancer. My in-depth knowledge of genomics and translational medicine within cancer care means I can interpret my patients’ medical history and test results from a wide breadth of knowledge, giving them a clear picture of their cancer risk.
When I began practising medicine, cancer genetics was a relatively new and evolving area of healthcare. It was estimated at the time that 1 out of every 3 people will develop cancer. Now, it is estimated to be 1 in 2 people. Noticing this increasing rate during my medical training, I began to contemplate what my role could look like in proactive cancer care and I realised it could have a huge impact on patients. Making the transition into a preventative cancer care arena felt like a natural next step and, in 2012, I was appointed as a Consultant Clinical Geneticist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Since then, I’ve devoted my time to publishing, presenting, and teaching in the field of cancer genetics at a national and international level. I’ve held several regional and national roles, including lead for the Cancer Genetics Service at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, council member of the UK Cancer Genetics Group, medical advisor to the UK Genetic Counselling Registration Board, and member of the Sarah Cannon Research Institutes’ Genomic Review Board. Over the years, I’ve worked with a broad range of colleagues to establish policies and guidelines relating to cancer genetics. I’ve helped to develop a variety of initiatives which have combined technology and science, with the ultimate goal of improving quality cancer care.
I’ve held the hands of thousands of patients, and tens of thousands of their relatives, as they went through their cancer genetics journeys. When you choose to consult with me, you’ll be putting your trust in someone who’s dedicated decades to optimising cancer care.
What is a Clinical Geneticist?
You may have heard of Genetic Counsellors. You probably wonder how they’re different from Clinical Geneticists. As a Clinical Geneticist, I’m a trained medical doctor who specialises in cancer genetics.
My medical and research background means I have detailed understanding of the biology of cancer development, how it can be diagnosed and treated, and how to interpret imaging, histology, non-genetics blood tests, and genomic tests.
The clinical experience I’ve accumulated means you will consult with a medical doctor who knows the ins and outs of cancer.
I offer a broad range of services, including cancer risk, assessment, genetic counselling and testing, genomic test interpretation and management of inherited cancer risk. I have a strong network of allied healthcare professionals–so you know you’ll get complete specialised care.
As a medical doctor, I must maintain my General Medical Council registration in order to provide clinical care. This ensures that my clinical care is held to the highest standard.
